Four days ago, Tesco and Sainsbury's share prices dropped significantly. Tesco's share price fell by 11.29%, while Sainsbury's declined by 8.31%. Tesco is represented in purple, and Sainsbury's in red/green.
I haven't found any specific reason for this sudden decline. However, it coincides with news that Asda is planning further price cuts to regain market share. This could be fuelling concerns about a potential price war among major supermarkets. Alternatively, worries about consumer spending may be weighing on the stocks—though this is not a new concern. Another possible factor could be fears of price spikes due to potential tariffs, but this seems unlikely, as the U.S. is not a major supplier of goods sold in UK supermarkets.
